Why older Americans are more likely to get divorced

Divorce rates among individuals over the age of 50 have increased significantly over the past three decades. This is partially attributable to the fact that people are living longer. Therefore, older Texas residents who are in unhappy marriages may feel like it’s worth it to seek a divorce. However, there are several other reasons why older folks may be more likely than their younger counterparts to end their relationships.

Parents may stay together for the sake of their children

It’s not uncommon for parents to stay in an unhappy relationship to ensure that their children grow up in a stable environment. However, once they are old enough to establish their own households, the people who raised them will typically take a trip to see their local divorce attorney. Generally speaking, by the time your kids are old enough to live on their own, you will likely be in your 50s or 60s.

Attitudes toward divorce have changed over the past 50 years

Throughout much of the 20th century, divorce was seen as a shameful act that should be avoided whenever possible. However, today, most people agree that a couple should not stay together if they aren’t happy. Furthermore, few would argue that a person should stay in a relationship if they are subject to physical, sexual or other forms of abuse. Ultimately, people who may have felt as if divorce wasn’t an option when they first got married may feel more comfortable ending their marriages today.

Have you been married before?

It’s not uncommon for someone in his or her 50s or 60s to get married for a second, third or fourth time. Historical data indicates that those who have ended a previous marriage are more likely to file for divorce from their current spouses.

If you’re thinking about ending your marriage for any reason, it is typically a good idea to speak with an attorney. Doing so may make it easier to obtain spousal support, child support or other resources that you might need to maintain a comfortable lifestyle as a single person.
