The difficulty of dealing with divorce during the holidays

There are a number of families in Texas facing their first year celebrating the holidays while at the same time dealing with the aftermath of divorce. Some of the new challenges they face include ferrying children back and forth between different homes and dealing with the feelings and emotions that come from not having the entire family together during a time of the year that most associate with family closeness.

Research shows that divorce rates are not declining, so it is understandable that many parents struggle with sorting out the different feelings and logistics that a new divorce brings to the holiday season. Parents have to deal with their own feelings of disappointment while at the same time dealing with the pain experienced by their children. Somehow, they also need to create the spirit of joy that traditionally surrounds the holiday season.

Many experts recommend that parents focus on their children. As hard as it may be, they may have to put their personal feelings to one side in order to make the holidays meaningful for their children. Parents should not use the holidays as a way of punishing an ex-spouse. Children can sense the tension and feel resentment, especially if one parent denies the children the privilege of seeing the other parent during the holidays.

A family law attorney may help parents sort out some of the challenges connected to child custody during a divorce. The lawyer may represent their clients during mediation agreements, set up visitation schedules or settle visitation agreements. Their goal, along with the court, is to create a family situation that is in the best interests of the children.
